The scammer threatens to have an arrest warrant issued unless the victim makes immediate payment. "In a recent case, the scammer requested the victim send six $500 iTunes gift cards. When asked why iTunes gift cards, the victim was advised that is currently the IRS's preferred form of payment," the LCSO release states. "The caller also tells the victim that if the store clerk asks if the iTunes cards for the IRS, that the victim should reply 'no' — or else additional taxes are added on. " In truth, the IRS does not make phone calls for back taxes, and regards iTunes gift cards as "a very suspicious form of payment. " The LCSO has put together an informational card about recognizing and avoiding scams. On it, Sheriff Brett Powell advises people to "think twice about wiring money for any reason. " "Of course there are safe transactions that are legitimate... however a large percentage are fraudulent," he said.
