Like venture capital investments, regeneration projects can take a long time to deliver on the initial vision. The thriving community of innovative companies now resident at the Helix, and the fact that 1 in 5 of them has received investment from the region’s finance programmes, is credit to the foresight of the policymakers and the decisions made twenty years ago – and to the work of the many stakeholders involved in delivering the programmes. The North East Fund and its predecessors (including North East Finance’s JEREMIE fund) has invested in companies all across the region, which occupy facilities including specialist 3D digital production facility Proto in Gateshead, Jade Business Park and Netpark in County Durham, Cobalt Business Park in North Tyneside and The North East Business and Innovation Centre in Sunderland. Wealth management specialist Fairstone Group , which received investment from the JEREMIE fund in 2013 to help support a widening of its business model, recently announced that its head office team will relocate from its Boldon Business Park base and make the short trip down the A19 to take-up residence in Nike’s former UK HQ at Doxford International Business Park in Sunderland, where it expects to add at least 130 more staff. Following the closure of 3i’s Newcastle office in 2001, there were very few early stage investors active in the region. Our predecessor, North East Finance, established Northstar Ventures and went on to secure funding from the European Regional Development Fund and European Investment Bank to launch the £160m North East JEREMIE Fund in 2010, with our £130m North East Fund following in 2018. Investment activity on this scale has helped to stimulate new business creation in the region by supporting entrepreneurs, spin-out companies commercializing research from the region’s Universities and several business accelerator programmes, including Ignite . It has also meant that SMEs in the region could continue to access finance during periods of market turbulence over the past two decades, when banks and other lenders and investors have scaled-back their activity. There are now at least seven fund management companies with a permanent presence in the region, contributing to an SME finance infrastructure and ecosystem which The North East Fund hopes to help sustain for many years to come.
