The round was said to be one of the largest pre-seed rounds in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (MENAP) region. Retailo allows small businesses to choose from a catalogue of over 5,000 SKUs which are delivered to their doorsteps in less than 24 hours. They can also avail Buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) services, giving them flexible payment options and credit lines. The company also provides data analytics services to sellers to help them evaluate sales performance and consumption trends. Growth potential in MENAP The UAE and Saudi Arabia have implemented fiscal reforms and unleashed large-scale programmes to develop the startup ecosystem and venture capital sector in the region. Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), has also been supportive of the ecosystem. The MENA region has a predominantly young population. Of the 600 million people in the region, over 50% were under 25 years old in 2021. This enables a customer base that welcomes disruptive business models and a growing culture of entrepreneurship. Foreign investment in the region such as Uber acquiring Careem (Pakistan) and Amazon acquiring Souk.com (UAE) shows increasing strength in the M&A market in the Middle East, creating more exit opportunities for both founders and investors. The retail industry in the MENAP region is worth $500 billion, which comprises 10 million small businesses serving a population of more than 700 million consumers. However, the majority of this retail industry is informal and undigitised due to which small businesses have to rely on inefficient supply chains.
