Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari) Show Caption He was out looking for blue whales about 10 miles west of the Dana Point coast, where the world’s largest mammal has been hanging out the past few days , when a whale popped up about a quarter mile away. But it was no blue whale. Thinking it was the strangest whale he’d seen, Burkhalter said, “At that moment, I was like ‘Oh my gosh, this is a sperm whale.’ “I don’t get chills much any more,” he said, “but that was pretty awesome. Sperm whales are super rare for this area.” While it’s not totally unheard of to spot the species off the Southern California coast, sometimes years pass between sightings, though the last local sighting was in November. “These animals have a unique placement of their blowhole on the side of the head, allowing for quick identification at a distance,” Newport Coastal Adventure Captain Ryan Lawler wrote on social media of the 45-degree-angled spouts the sperm whales create. But tracking them is no easy task. Related Articles After spotting the whales on June 3, to track them down the following morning boat captains had to listen for the loud echolocation clicks the sperm whales use, which can be detected with a specialized hydrophone, Lawler said. “After traveling 30 miles from Newport Beach, there was finally a sperm whale click heard,” he said, “With another hour of tracking, the crew at last located the same three sperm whales from the previous evening’s encounter.” Sperm whales spend most of their time very far from shore, Lawler said. The endangered animals – the one spotted Thursday was about 50-feet long – are hard to come by, with whalers previously decimating the population by hunting the species for its oil. The best estimates suggest there are more than 200,000 sperm whales alive today. Sperm whales, which were the inspiration for “Moby Dick,” are said to have the biggest brains of any animal species and make the loudest sound of any animal on earth. The spermaceti is an oil sac that helps the whales focus sound. It was used in oil lamps, lubricants and candles, leading to the over-hunting of the species.
