A new character on “ Ted Lasso ” is played by an actor who graduated from Syracuse University despite having no experience playing soccer (er, football). Maximilian Osinski, who got his BFA from SU in 2006, plays Zava, the mononymous addition to AFC Richmond on the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series. Osinski first appeared on the second episode of the third (and final?) season, providing a spark for the team amid head coach Ted Lasso’s (Jason Sudeikis) new rivalry with “wonder kid” Nate (Nick Mohammed), who is now coaching for Rupert’s (Anthony Head) West Ham United. At 6-foot-4, “Max” appears larger than life on screen and looks like a natural soccer player. However, Osinski grew up overweight as his family wasn’t into sports or nutrition, according to Muscle & Fitness magazine , and he pretty much never kicked a ball until he landed on “Ted Lasso.” “Right after I got the role, I hired a soccer coach, one-on-one and I was training soccer for six weeks to eight weeks,” Osinski told GQ . “And then I had a Zoom call with the football director Pedro [Romhanyi] and our football assistant director Dan [Parslow]. They said, Listen, man, you take care of the swagger, we’ll take care of the ball. Which made me feel a little bit better. And then when I came to set, we rehearsed all those stunt kicks. And I’m actually I’m pretty proud I was able to pull those off.” “Ted Lasso” is proving to be a breakout role for Osinski, whose previous credits include “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “The Walking Dead: World Beyond.” One of his first roles was as Gerhard Schwedes in 2008′s “The Express,” the biopic about Syracuse football legend Ernie Davis. Osinski was born in a refugee camp in Austria to Polish parents who fled their home country for the U.S. He grew up in Chicago and started acting in high school, where his drama teacher helped him get into Syracuse’s acting program. At SU, he reportedly studied abroad at the Shakespeare Globe Theatre in London, was selected to be a part of Sorkin Week program (with Oscar-winning screenwriter and SU alum Aaron Sorkin), and frequently made trips to New York to learn more about theater. “I remember that in high school and college I didn’t love the whole idea of being on stage and being like, ‘Look at me.’ What I enjoyed more was working on a character and the craft behind it,” he told Pop Culturalist in 2021. “For me, it was more about digging into what makes that character tick, why they behave a certain way, and what makes them think the way they do.” It’s unclear how the rest of the season will unfold for Zava — we won’t spoil anything, but he’s already disrupted things once — but some fans are attempting to decipher clues from the character’s inspiration. Osinski told GQ that he’s based on real-life greats like Eric Cantona and Zlatan Ibrahimović, mixing enigma and ego with charm. “The question mark about him is you don’t know if he’s going to kiss you or kick you in the balls,” Osinski told Vanity Fair . “Ted Lasso” is currently streaming on Apple TV+ .
