Mr Ashton said weaker global economic growth was not hurting Worley’s business prospects, noting that the United States’ Inflation Reduction Act and Infrastructure Bill were boosting investment in America and that plenty of big global companies like BP were still investing in Australia. Group profit margins dropped to 5.8 per cent from 6 per cent as procurement revenue more than doubled from a year earlier. Margins on procurement services are lower than other kinds of services provided by Worley, such as design and engineering. Excluding procurement costs such as buying materials and equipment, underlying profit margins rose slightly to 6.5 per cent from 6.4 per cent a year earlier. Worley lifted its forecast for underlying profit margins in fiscal 2024 to between 7.5 and 8 per cent (excluding procurement costs) from its previous forecast of 7.5 per cent. Advertisement The company aims to win higher-margin contracts, continue increasing revenues and use technology to improve productivity. This includes using automation to calculate the thickness of pipe walls, which Mr Ashton said freed up people to work on other tasks. The engineering group will pay a final dividend of 25¢ per share, flat on a year earlier, representing a payout ratio of 75 per cent of underlying net profit after tax and amortisation. It will pay a total dividend of 50¢ per share, flat on a year earlier. Worley told investors in February that it would pay dividends at the lower end of a new target payout ratio of 50 to 75 per cent over the medium term compared with a payout ratio of 85 per cent in the first half. The company is still trying to repatriate assets from Russia, which were worth $23 million at the end of June including $4 million of cash in Russian bank accounts. Worley withdrew from Russia after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Mr Ashton took home $6.2 million in fiscal 2023, including a $2 million fixed salary and a $2.5 million cash bonus due to Worley’s strong underlying financial performance.
