Some 25,000 mitral valve replacements and about 13,000 mitral valve repairs are annually performed in the United States alone, but only the severest cases are treated today because of the risks of open-heart surgery. The Endovalve system is designed to allow for a complete mitral valve replacement without open-heart surgery so that many more sufferers will not have to defer treatment until the disease becomes critical or a serious cardiac event takes place. Battelle Ventures and its affiliate fund, Innovation Valley Partners, were the sole investors in the company's series A financing.
