It consolidated its ownership over 11 of its subsidiaries across several markets — Singapore, Europe, the UK, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, Japan, Indonesia, and India. It did this by acquiring remaining stock, bringing its ownership to full or near-full ownership in these entities. Nium also completed a 100% equity acquisition of Singapore-based alternative payments startup SoCash on June 16, 2022. SoCash operated a payments network allowing customers to deposit, withdraw, and pay with cash in local shops, cafes, and grocery stores. The filings show that SoCash was acquired for a total purchase consideration of S$17.5 million, of which about S$17.3 million comprised 7,440 Nium ordinary shares and the remainder in cash. The SoCash acquisition was aimed at accelerating Nium’s entry into the alternative payments space and enhance its payout capabilities. Nium’s management, however, has since decided to discontinue SoCash’s business just a year after acquiring it. “During the June 2023 meeting, the management decided to discontinue the SoCash alternative payments business and instead use the licence and resources to focus on high growth and core business. Accordingly, the management expects to recognise the impairment of goodwill and other intangibles (approximately S$17.3 milllion) in the year ending December 2023,” Nium stated in the filing. Nium had acquired two other firms in an acquisition spree aimed at accelerating its expansion. These firms were London-based B2B payments company Ixaris and Wirecard Forex India. IPO plans Nium has been laying the groundwork for a US listing for a while now. The Singapore fintech unicorn, which currently values at nearly $2 billion, aims to go public in the second quarter of 2025, shared its CEO and co-founder Prajit Nanu in a Bloomberg interview last month. He added that he expects Nium to break even within 12 months and turn profitable before it hits IPO. Nium’s largest shareholder is Temasek Holdings with an 11.58% stake in the firm. This is followed by Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia and India holding a 9.21% stake and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC with a 7.89% stake. Other investors in the firm include Riverwood Capital, Vertex Growth Fund, GSR Ventures, Rocket Internet, Global Founders Capital, Emtek, and Ripple Labs, according to DealStreetAsia’s DATA VANTAGE. Nanu added in the Bloomberg interview that the firm remains on the lookout for new acquisitions in emerging markets like Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. It has set aside about $50 million to acquire another 2-3 firms over the next year.
