Before the pandemic, those were mostly in-person activities ; now they are a mix, Shenoy said. KidPass had raised $6.6 million in investment, according to CrunchBase. The latest is Little Passports, a New York City company that sends out subscription boxes for children to explore, allowing them to delve into art, science, geography and history on their own terms, outside of the four walls of school. Unlike the educational apps, Little Passports provides what Shenoy called “tangible play,” meaning that kids do the activities in a real physical space. For Begin, the idea is to use each application or service as an entry point into a family’s life and then be the go-to resource when those parents or kids are looking for outside help with academics, socio-emotional skills or particular hobbies from art to coding. After the three acquisitions, Begin now employs 250 people, up from 150 around this time last year. The firm would not disclose the purchase prices or its total revenue, which Shenoy said was tens of millions of dollars annually.
