The 27-year-old says Web3 is “reemerging as the sexy thing to invest in.” In fact, $7.1 billion was invested into Web 3, metaverse, crypto and AI ventures in 2022, according to this report published by Metaverse Post. When vetting companies, Alston’s ethos is that the founder always comes first. Many of us, including myself, have experienced the tumultuous pace of startups, where company objectives, brand identities, and hell, entire strategies can change overnight. One thing VCs are looking for, Alston says, are people who are open-minded to change. “Every company pivots, right? Uber's not a limo service anymore. Amazon is barely a bookstore…What I'm looking for is someone with a rabid, almost obsession with the problem that they're solving, and I'm looking for that person to also be flexible,” she says. “Is that person coachable? Can we work well together as we figure out how to grow the company? Are they gonna be prepared for their next pivot, because it's almost inevitable at this point that they'll have it.” Despite it being a world where just 1.9% of all venture capital investments last year went to women-founded startups and an even bleaker 1% went to Black-founded startups–both a decline from the year prior–people that go beyond the typical startup narrative tend to get along well with Lightship. The team is entirely minority-led, made up of women, people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community and people with disabilities. For Alston, due diligence has been the name of the game since day one, as she says she takes between 60 to 90 days to come to a conclusion on whether to invest in a startup, whereas some of her peers “are just showing up to a meeting with a term sheet in hand.” “I think as a Black-led fund and a young-led fund, I'm under more scrutiny than some of my peers,” she says. “Everything has to be right–all of the I's have to be dotted and the T’s have to be crossed.” After Layoffs And A CEO Change, Cometeer’s Frozen Coffee Pod Business Is In Hot Water MARTIN POOLE/GETTY IMAGES To the outside world, Cometeer was buzzing.
