Instead, patients’ billing is handled directly through the app via credit card, electronic checks, cash, etc. Assuming patient authorization, Atlas.md can track digital interactions between doctor and patient through Twitter, email, and/or SMS. The app will then archive these messages within the respective patient profiles. Combined with a simple note-taking feature, direct care doctors can create an easily accessible patient history. The Atlas.md app lets doctors generate their own digital sign-up page. This online form can be embedded on their sales site. Patients can then complete it for themselves, and even additional family members, on any web-enabled device. The four-step process can be paused and resumed at any time for patient convenience; there is no pen and paper required. Atlas.md’s prescription features allow doctors to quickly find local pharmacies. Doctors can even cc patients on an email so they know when a script has been submitted. Besides these tools, Atlas.md also lets doctors inventory, dispense and prescribe wholesale medications right in their own clinic. According to Atlas MD cofounder Dr. Doug Nunamaker, “The ability to prescribe and fill prescriptions for patients through the Atlas.md software has resulted in tremendous savings for our patients, both in terms of cost, and time. Not to mention it directly increases both our value to our patients, and our ability to communicate that value to them.” Unlike current EMR/practice management software, doctors can use Atlas.md to manage billing and payments between both patients and vendors. Scheduling and task management tools are included on the Atlas.md dashboard to improve workflow and help minimize staff/overhead costs. The app is capable of compiling billing data to generate a comprehensive, top-down look at practice financials, too. There are currently about 5,000 physicians practicing direct care in the United States. Umbehr says, “We have been successful in designing a tool that helps us run our practice efficiently, and we want to share that exact same tool with other doctors.”
